The Negro Hunt - Felix Martin

The Negro Hunt - Felix Martin
We investigate on "The Negro Hunt", made in 1873, one of the first sculptures to show the brutality of slavery. A rare testimony of a dark passage in our history. The author Félix Martin was born deaf. At the time, deaf people who spoke sign language were considered as monkeys, like black people. Through this work, he wanted to denounce discrimination and the horrors of slavery, particularly the training of dogs against slaves. Censored and then hidden, this striking sculpture was rediscovered by chance only a few years ago by the curator of the Roubaix Museum, who made it one of the museum's masterpieces.
