Beatitudes - Maurice Denis

Beatitudes - Maurice Denis
A new work is on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Limoges: "Beatitudes" by Maurice Denis. This work in 8 paintings has an incredible history. An investigation, based on the testimonies of the painter's family and the patron who owned the Beatitudes, reveals that these paintings are actually sketches. Maurice Denis painted them in 1916 for the project of decorating the chapel of his priory house in Saint Germain en Laye. In the end, it was his patron and friend Gabriel Thomas who acquired the paintings for his property in Meudon: "les Capucins". This investigation takes us to the discovery of this extraordinary patron. Gabriel Thomas made it possible to build the Musée Grévin, the Théâtre des Champs Elysées and even... the Eiffel Tower!
