Gustave Moreau

Gustave Moreau
Gustave Moreau is French painter, engraver and draftsman, and one of the main representatives in painting of the symbolist current, impregnated with mysticism. He wants to abstract himself from data of reality, from life. With his numerous trips to Italy, he borrowed a lot from the masters of the Renaissance, and integrated exotic and oriental motifs into his pictorial compositions. He was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts and appointed professor in 1892 in Paris and a museum is dedicated to him. The Gustave Moreau National Museum opened its doors in 1903. The collection includes nearly 1,200 paintings, pastels and watercolours, and 4,830 drawings kept in cabinets and cupboards with pivoting shutters and large inventory numbers, designed by Gustave Moreau himself.
