Paul Sérusier spent his entire summer of 1888 painting with Paul Gauguin in Pont-Aven, Brittany. This master of colour gave invaluable advice to the young Sérusier, who was part of the new generation of painters known as the Post-Impressionists. The Impressionists favoured the visual sensation of the motif, but they had not broken with the illusionist rendering of nature.
