François Boucher

François Boucher (1703-1770) is the archetypal French Rococo painter. He paints mythological themes tinged with gallantry, for example in the beautiful “Diane resting after her Bath” at the Louvre Museum. His patron was Madame de Pompadour, whose portrait he painted many times. Influenced by the Enlightenment movement, he devoted himself to Chinese themes (“The Chinese Garden”), to pastoral landscape (“Charms of Country Life”) and to a certain sensual Orientalism (“Brown Odalisque”).
