Lucas Cranach the Elder

Lucas Cranach the Elder (c. 1472-1553) is a major artist of the German Renaissance, working in Wittenberg in the first half of the 16th century. Official painter to Frederic the Wise, the Prince Regent of Saxony, he was close to the reformer Martin Luther. As well as biblical themes, he was above all interested in portrayal of the female nude, as in the “Adam and Eve” of Besancon or the famous “Three Graces”, recently acquired by the Louvre after a fund raising appeal.
