Vienna is said to be one of the greatest capitals of art and culture in Europe and the world. There are many museums in the Austrian capital, including history, modern art and art history museums. Here are 5 museums to discover in Vienna.

The Belvedere

The Belvedere houses one of the finest collections of art in Austria. Built in the 18th century for Prince Eugene, it is composed of a park and two baroque palaces. In the first palace you will find permanent exhibitions. The world's largest collection of the Austrian painter Gustav Klimt is on display here. Renowned masterpieces such as "The Kiss" or "Judith". Also works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Schiele, and many others... The second palace houses temporary exhibitions.

The Kunsthistorisches Museum

The Kunsthistorisches Museum is Vienna's art history museum. As a fine arts museum, it is one of the most prestigious in the world. The architecture is particularly atypical with its very large dome. The collection is unique: Klimt's frescoes, the largest collection of Brueghel. But also works by Rembrandt, Velazquez, Rubens...

The Albertina

Located in the city centre, the Albertina was the palace that served as the residence of the Habsburg imperial family. Now a museum, it houses a prestigious collection of artworks. It contains works by Monet, Degas, Gauguin, Picasso, as well as the great names of the Italian Renaissance: Michelangelo, Raphael, and Da Vinci.

Museum of Modern Art Ludwig Foundation (MUMOK)

The Museum of Modern Art ('MUMOK') houses more than 9,000 works from the 20th and 21st centuries. To name a few artists: Picasso, Klee, Warhol, Oldenburg... Thus, all the artistic trends of the last two centuries are mixed together: Pop Art, Impressionism, New Realism, Viennese Actionism and Photorealism.

MuseumsQuartier and Leopold Museum

The last museum in the selection is located in the "Museums Quartier". With its baroque and contemporary architecture, Museums Quartier covers 60,000 m2 and includes several large museums, as well as cafés, bars, restaurants and shops. The most famous of these museums is the Leopold Museum of Modern Art. It houses the collections of Schiele and Klimt, major works of the Viennese Secession. The museum also houses paintings and objects from the last two centuries.
