Discover 5 impressionist women

When we think of Impressionism, we think of Manet, Renoir, Monet or Degas. But did you know that there were also women who followed and influenced this major art movement? Today, Museum TV presents 5 impressionist women.

Anna Ancher

Anna Ancher Harvesters (Ancher)

Associated with the Skagen painters, a group of Scandinavian artists from 1870, Anna Ancher was greatly inspired by the French Impressionists. Indeed, her painting Récolte uses the codes of a painting by touch, where we see the marks of the brush. Notice the impressive work on colour and light! Another influence of the impressionists.

Marie Bracquemond

Born into a working class family, Marie Bracquemond made a name for herself in the fine arts by teaching herself. Her works are inspired by the freedom of Impressionism at the end of the century, as the artist paints vivid subjects in vibrant colours! Her painting On the Terrace at Sèvres is no match for the Déjeuner des canotiers.

Nadežda Petrović

Let's go to Serbia to discover Nadežda Petrović! Indeed, she was the most important woman of fine arts in 19th century Serbia. Her works are characterised by an astonishing modernity, inspired by the techniques of her French counterparts. Note the beauty of her painting Old Belgrade! Once again, colour is king.

Berthe Morisot

Berthe Morisot was very close to Edouard Manet and was his model, and is one of the most important women of Impressionism. Indeed, like many of her counterparts, she was criticised at the beginning of her career as a painter. It is interesting to rediscover her work in the image of Julie Manet and her doggy Laërte. This painting synthesises all the codes of impressionism. To such an extent that it may seem slightly caricatural.

Mary Cassatt

After a refusal to be exhibited by the Salon, Mary Cassatt listened to her friend Degas and exhibited her work at the fourth Impressionist exhibition. The exhibition included a wonderful painting of Lydia in a dressing room wearing a pearl necklace. This was the beginning of a great love affair with the Impressionists. She even became friends with Berthe Morisot and also collaborated with Pissaro.
