No one knows; for most of bosch’s works no documents or precise information about buyers exist. even the dating itself is complicated. Historians, archivists, and art critics have tried everything. A veil of mystery envelops his entire artistic production, giving rise to the most varied rumours but for now searching for clues in the local traditions, in the writings in latin, french, german and dutch, searching for possible iconographic precedents and parallels, peering into the murky mirror of magical rites and heresies, delving into alchemy treatises, and pulling out from the fog of history figures who had practically been forgotten. The search goes on, but for the time being we have no first-hand information. For almost all of bosch’s works, no conclusive documents on the clients and destinations of his works have remained. Everything is left open to speculation to the most varied conjectures.
