Protest

This episode of Art21 examines how contemporary artists describe and interrogate war, express outrage and empathy for the suffering of others. Witnessing tragic events, presenting alternative histories, or engaging in activism, the artists interviewed in Protest use the visual arts to provoke personal transformation and challenge social revolutions: Chilean artist, architect, and filmmaker Alfredo Jaar, Vietnamese-American photographer An-My Lê, American conceptual artist Jenny Holzer, and American visual artist and painter Nancy Spero, who died in 2009.
