«CONTEMPORARY ART EVENING AUCTION» • NYC

Led by Mark Rothko’s majestic Untitled (Black on Maroon) from 1958, a work which preempts the artist’s celebrated Seagram Murals in the Tate Collection in London, Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale on October 28 is comprised of works by many of the most celebrated Post-War and Contemporary artists. Minimalist masterpieces by the likes of Robert Ryman, Donald Judd and Frank Stella give way to mesmerizing abstract paintings by Clyfford Still and Brice Marden from the Baltimore Museum of Art, and the Pop movement is represented by three outstanding Andy Warhol paintings and a superlative Jasper Johns ‘Flag’ from 1986-87. Postwar icons of sculptural engineering and design, such as Carlo Mollino’s 1950 Dining Table and the fabled Alfa Romeo B.A.T. cars, also make their debut in a Sotheby’s Contemporary Art Evening Sale.

MARK ROTHKO | UNTITLED (BLACK ON MAROON) – 1958
FRANK STELLA | UNTITLED – 1936
ANDY WARHOL | STATUE OF LIBERTY – 1986
JEAN-MICHEL BASQUIAT | BLACK – 1986
