This week the fake is hiding amongst a collection of Urban Landscapes in Manchester Art Gallery. Somewhere, amid scenes of Manchester life painted by the impressionist artist Adolfe Valette and his pupil, the hugely popular LS Lowry, is a meticulous copy standing in for the real thing. Getting up close and personal with the art of their city, the people of Manchester and Salford examine the gallery’s work in forensic detail and are challenged to consider what really makes a masterpiece. One of this country's leading copyists; Susie Ray, has made this week’s replica, and in duplicating the original artist's techniques she developed a deep respect for him and his work.
