Kings and Queens
The British public continue to look closer than ever before at art as they take up the challenge of spotting a range of fake paintings hung across the country’s public art galleries. This week, the British public focuses on iconic royal portraits dating from the 16th century as they attempt to spot a fake among The National Portrait Gallery of Scotland’s collection of Stuart paintings. While scrutinizing works over 500 years old, the people of Edinburgh rediscover characters and stories from Scotland’s turbulent history. As they explore the collection, they also uncover the story of how British artists discovered perspective and evolved the art of portraiture. A meticulous 16th-century copy has been created by Jonathan Adams, a restorer and copyist, who hopes his royal portrait will enjoy a respectable reign among gallery visitors—challenging perceptions and celebrating the rich history of British art. Hosted by Giles Coren and art historian Rose Balston.
