This week the challenge is to find a fake hanging in The Lady Lever Gallery in the Wirral. In looking closely at the gallery’s collection of C18th portraits, the public come face to face with a group of Georgians who used art to reflect their wealth and social status. With great painters immortalising them on canvas, they became Britain’s first celebrities. Discovering the technical detail and innovative skill employed by great artists such as Joshua Reynolds, Thomas Gainsborough, John Hoppner and their contemporaries, the public must track down a copy made by the notorious ex-forger John Myatt. Although his forgery days are long behind him, Myatt is using everything in his arsenal to create a copy that will hang amongst the originals in the gallery. But will anybody spot it? Giles Coren hosts, and art historian Rose Balston is on hand to provide insight into the painting of this era.
