Episode 21
Fiona Bruce presents a special Antiques Roadshow from Normandy and the D-Day Museum in Portsmouth to mark the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings. Through powerful eyewitness accounts and historical artefacts, the episode retraces the largest seaborne invasion in history: Operation Overlord. Veterans and witnesses like Ken Cooke, who landed on Gold Beach, and Marie Scott, a radio operator in Portsmouth, share moving memories. In Caen, Fiona revisits the heroic actions of CSM Stanley Hollis—the only soldier awarded the Victoria Cross on D-Day—and meets his granddaughter. Rare items include a child’s toy made from landing craft debris, a coat with 89 regiment badges, and a decoy ‘Rupert’ paratrooper. Experts explore a restored Landing Craft Tank and the Overlord Embroidery, and meet descendants of General Montgomery and Piper Bill Millin. The episode also honours the unsung heroes: a Black American soldier who launched barrage balloons at Omaha Beach, and the meteorologist whose forecast delayed the invasion by 24 hours—and changed history.
