At the same time, he amassed an important private collection including works by C\u00e9zanne, Renoir and Rousseau. After his death and that of his wife, the collection was left to the French government on the condition that it was not split up. As there was not enough room in the Louvre, the whole collection was housed in the Orangerie, in the Tuileries Gardens.
