He wants to abstract himself from data of reality, from life. With his numerous trips to Italy, he borrowed a lot from the masters of the Renaissance, and integrated exotic and oriental motifs into his pictorial compositions. He was elected to the Academy of Fine Arts and appointed professor in 1892 in Paris and a museum is dedicated to him. The Gustave Moreau National Museum opened its doors in 1903.
