His first paintings were marked by impressionism. He introduced a new concept to his works such as mechanical elements, which allow him to reflect modern life. The twenties were intense with many commissions, creations and meetings. He even worked for the cinema. When war was declared in 1940, he left France for New York and found his exiled painter friends. This American period was marked by various research on contrasts. In 1945 he was back in Paris and joined the French Communist Party. He defended new ideas such as the new realism in art.
