Andr\u00e9 Derain was one of the founders of fauvism. The painter trained from 1898 to 1899 at the Camillo Academy. In this academy, he befriended Henri Matisse that he met while copying paintings in the Louvre. He joined him in Collioure in 1905 and defined the style that allowed him to be known to the general public: bright colours, simplified drawing, clear composition. After 1906, he seemed to be influenced by Gauguin and the primitive arts of Oceania, his colours became less vivid. Derain’s work was essentially pictorial, but he was very well known as a sculptor. He also signed many sets and costumes for prestigious ballets and illustrated about thirty books.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
