On Saturday 17 May 2025, the 21st European Museum Night<\/a> will take place. Nearly 3,000 museums in France and Europe will be opening their doors until midnight. They will be offering fun activities and entertainment specially prepared for the occasion, including screenings, shows and illuminated tours. All the collections and entertainment on offer will be free of charge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The origins<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Initially set up on a national scale under the name \u2018Printemps des mus\u00e9es\u2019 (since 1999), following on from Berlin’s \u2018Lange Nacht des Museen\u2019 (since 1997). It was in 2005 that this event took on a European dimension, giving rise to the \u2018European Night of the Museums\u2019. This initiative, promoted by the French Ministry of Culture and sponsored by UNESCO, the Council of Europe and ICOM, is designed to encourage and promote knowledge of national and European heritage and cultural identity. The Ministry of Culture is organising the event with the support of the Regional Directorates of Cultural Affairs (DRAC). <\/p>\n\n\n

THE COUNTRIES INVOLVED IN THE 2025 EDITION <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

More than 30 European countries will be taking part in this project. They include Italy, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Latvia and Lithuania. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In France, every region is involved, whether metropolitan or overseas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

OVERVIEW OF FORTHCOMING EVENTS <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In France<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n
\n

Mus\u00e9e de l’Orangerie <\/span> <\/mark><\/strong>
Visitors will be invited to discover or rediscover Monet’s famous Water Lilies, the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions from 6pm to 11pm in a cosy atmosphere. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Louvre<\/mark><\/strong> <\/span>
In addition to the collections and exhibitions on view between 6pm and 11pm, the Louvre<\/a> is inviting visitors to discover the educational project of the students who took part in \u2018the class, the work\u2019 between 1.30pm and 5.30pm. In addition, the Intore dancers from Rwanda will be performing in front of the pyramid, while the Il Buranello ensemble will be offering a musical interlude of voice and theorbo lit by candlelight. Other workshops such as Moodboard making, light painting, phosphorescent felt-tip graphics, puppets, lanterns, feather skirt decorations and card embroidery will also be available from 6.30pm to 10pm. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art<\/mark><\/strong><\/span>
Exhibitions and an ultra-connected programme will be on show this European Museum Night. DJ sets from macBAR, a Playformance evening under the neon lights, Simon Leroux’s participative and immersive creation, <\/span>La For\u00eat d\u00e9pli\u00e9e<\/span><\/i>, and XXL video games. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

Mus\u00e9e des Beaux-Arts de Tours & Mus\u00e9e du Compagnonnage de Tours<\/mark><\/strong><\/span>
From 7pm, the collections of the Beaux-Arts museum<\/a> will be on show, accompanied by a mini concert lasting until midnight. At the Compagnonnage\u2019s museum the audience will be treated to choreographed strolls by the contemporary dance company NAO. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Alexandre-Franconie Museum & Museum of Guianese Cultures<\/mark><\/strong><\/span>
The programme in French Guiana<\/a>. The Mus\u00e9e Alexandre Franconie will be presenting its new exhibition gallery <\/span>S\u00e9 moun-yan Lagwiyann,<\/span><\/i> figures from French Guiana, life stories, its new temporary showcase Poissons de mer de Guyane, biodiversit\u00e9, recherche et savoir-faire, and a discovery workshop <\/span>Pangi, Tembe, Tori, a journey to the heart of Businenge traditions<\/span><\/i>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

At the Museum of Guianese Cultures, there will be a show entitled <\/span><\/span>Les <\/span>marionnettes<\/span> cont\u00e9es<\/span> de Sandra (Sandra’s Storytelling Puppets)<\/span><\/span>, a conference-debate entitled <\/span><\/span>La Brique de <\/span>Guyane<\/span> dans <\/span>tous<\/span> ses<\/span> \u00e9tats (Guianese Bricks in All Their Forms)<\/span><\/span>, and an exhibition entitled <\/span><\/span>Regards <\/span>crois\u00e9s<\/span> entre <\/span>marionnettes<\/span> et architectures (Crossing Perspectives between Puppets and Architecture)<\/span><\/span>. Relaxation evenings at the two sites, such as <\/span><\/span>Rediscovery of three legends from Guyana<\/span><\/span> and <\/span><\/span>Popular board games enter the museum<\/span><\/span>, as well as a tasting of \u2018real\u2019 Creole soup, will also be available.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Museum Cri\u0219 Land Oradea- Romania<\/mark><\/strong><\/span>
The permanent exhibitions in the Natural Sciences, Archaeology and History, Art, Ethnography, Lapidary and Vivarium sections will be open to the public. As well as the temporary exhibitions; <\/span>Contemporary Painters of Oradea and Mary of Romania, Queen and Artist.<\/span><\/i> <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\n

Porto-Portugal Customs Museum<\/span>
<\/mark><\/strong>A guided nocturnal tour of the building’s mysteries and legends entitled <\/span>Legends, Gropings and Swindlers: a visit in the half-light with Z\u00e9 do Saco, the smuggler<\/span><\/i>. Visitors will be led along a route linking the river jetty to the renovated Library. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>

MUCIV Museum of Civilisation in Rome – Italy<\/mark><\/strong><\/span>
At 7pm, a special evening for families, Tradition at Play, will be held at the Palazzo dei Arti e dei Tradizioni Popolare. At 8pm there will be a guided tour of the collections for adults in the Palazzo dei Scienti. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

MAJOR PROJECTS IN FRANCE <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

THE CLASS, THE WORK<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The \u2018La classe, l’\u0153uvre\u2019 scheme is run jointly by the Ministry of Culture and the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Research. Launched in 2013, the project is open to pupils from nursery school to high school. Students become creators, mediators and performers. By studying one or more works in the collections of the Mus\u00e9es de France, FRACs, art centres or Maisons des Illustres, the students, accompanied by their teachers, give free rein to their creativity. Their creations, whether visual, literary, scenic or digital, are presented to the public during the European Night of the Museums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This <\/span>year<\/span>, the <\/span>Mus\u00e9e<\/span> du <\/span>Revermont<\/span> in Auvergne Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes <\/span>will<\/span> be<\/span> unveiling<\/span> the <\/span>work<\/span> of the CE2 class <\/span>from<\/span> the Moulin de Val-<\/span>Revermont<\/span> school<\/span> on the <\/span>temporary<\/span> exhibition \u2018Invitation aux <\/span>nuages<\/span>\u2019, <\/span>accompanied<\/span> by an <\/span><\/span>\u2018<\/span>Astro<\/span> Quizz<\/span>\u2019<\/span><\/span>. In the Hauts-de-France <\/span>region<\/span>, the <\/span>museum<\/span> in Boulogne-sur-Mer and <\/span>pupils<\/span> from<\/span> Jules Ferry <\/span>will<\/span> be<\/span> taking<\/span> visitors<\/span> on a <\/span>journey<\/span> from<\/span> the English Channel to the Pacific <\/span>Ocean<\/span>. <\/span>Pupils<\/span> become<\/span> \u2018cultural <\/span>ambassadors<\/span>\u2019<\/span>.<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A few figures: the \u2018The class, the work\u2019 operation involves 6,125 participants in 311 projects in 462 classes in 281 schools and 254 participating museums. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

NATIONAL GUIDE TO RURAL MUSEUMS <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

One of the objectives pursued during this 21st edition is to highlight French museums in rural areas. This project has been awarded the “exhibition of national interest” label. Thus, this Culture and Rurality plan is being implemented in collaboration with the Grand Palais Rmn via the National Guide to Rural Museums, presented as a web application, available for the European Night of Museums on May 17. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

GRAPHIC DESIGN AND TECHNICAL DESIGN OF THE POSTER <\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Regarding<\/span> the event poster, Clotilde Puy, who was entrusted by the Ministry of Culture with responsibility for the visuals, was responsible. The Ministry’s instructions specified <\/span><\/span>stop-motion<\/span><\/span> animation and paper cutouts to create a dancing animation. Thus, in collaboration with graphic designer Elsa Antoine, Clotilde Puy created this unique work in bright colors using the tufting technique<\/a>. Having discovered this technique during the first lockdown, the artist began tufting five years ago. The 110 cm high by 90 cm wide tapestry was created using a wool gun on the back of a stretched canvas. The canvas was then photographed by Claire Curt to bring the poster to life. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The distinctly shaped patterns create a clear and expressive effect. An amphora symbolizing Greece and the European aspect of the event, a pyramid evoking the museums of France, and more contemporary silhouettes and ornaments adorn the work. Clotilde Puy’s sources of inspiration are primarily Niki de Saint Phalle and Matisse. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The use of the tufting technique can be seen both as a showcase for crafts within culture and as a tribute to women. Indeed, tapestry, long considered a discredited feminine art, has become a notorious object of communication. Contrasting with the visuals of previous editions, this poster is bound to be noticed. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
